China Airlines is advancing its fleet renewal strategy, with plans to take delivery of its first two newly acquired Boeing 787-9 passenger aircraft by the end of this year. President Chen Han-ming stated during a media interview that the carrier aims to receive two Boeing 787-9 aircraft by year-end, followed by an additional 12 aircraft scheduled for delivery next year. Chen noted that introducing the new fleet will replace older aircraft while reducing fuel consumption by 20 percent and lowering noise levels by 30 percent.
Addressing the timeline for delivery, Chen explained that schedules experienced delays due to seat collision testing requirements. However, he emphasized that progress is currently moving in a positive direction, keeping the target of receiving two Boeing 787-9 jets before the end of the year intact. Looking ahead, China Airlines plans to build a total Boeing 787 fleet of 24 aircraft, comprising 18 787-9s and six 787-10s. Deliveries will proceed progressively starting this year, with initial deployments planned for regional Asian routes such as Seoul and Osaka.
Alongside its fleet modernization efforts, China Airlines is advancing its environmental initiatives. The carrier announced its fifth participation in the SkyTeam "The Aviation Challenge" (TAC), adding 40 percent Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) for the first time on a long-haul flight from Taoyuan to Amsterdam on September 13. This move forms part of the airline's strategy to support the broader goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Regarding commercial operations, Chen highlighted that despite significant fuel price volatility this year, China Airlines adjusted capacity and aircraft deployment based on passenger demand. Excluding fuel price fluctuations, revenue has significantly outperformed last year's figures, supported by strong passenger demand in July and August alongside monthly cargo revenue reaching NT$7 billion to NT$8 billion. Consequently, management remains cautiously optimistic about full-year financial performance and employee year-end bonuses.
