Southwest Airlines announced a ChatGPT plugin on October 6, allowing travelers to discover destinations, search for its flights and explore booking options through a conversational interface. The airline describes this as the first step in a phased approach to AI-powered booking developed with OpenAI and Amazon Web Services.
The initial service is intended to bring Southwest into the planning process earlier and create a more direct route from travel ideas to airline booking options. Southwest says capabilities will expand over time. Its announcement supports flight discovery and shopping; it does not establish that every payment, ticketing or after-sales transaction can already be completed inside a ChatGPT conversation.
