Boeing is offering a drop-in replacement for the Touchscreen Control Display Unit (TCDU) on 737 MAX and NG aircraft. The replacement uses a touchscreen instead of the old button panel, while leaving the button configuration and layout unchanged. Boeing says the touchscreen is to become standard in MAX 10 models and can also be retrofitted into 737 NG and MAX aircraft.
Professional pilots have criticized the change, saying touchscreens are harder to operate in turbulent skies. Some pilots also say physical buttons provide tactile feedback that gives them more confidence in high-pressure situations. Boeing emphasizes claimed reliability, cost and weight benefits. It also says the glass lasts longer than worn buttons, which could mean lower maintenance needs.
