An Italian Army CH-47 Chinook helicopter assigned to the European Union Force (EUFOR) crashed during a training flight near the Gorice area by Brčko in northern Bosnia-Herzegovina on October 29, killing and injuring people on board. EUFOR confirmed the crash caused no damage to infrastructure, buildings or civilian vehicles, and no civilian casualties.
The helicopter was conducting a routine training flight in the Brčko region, about 180 kilometres north of the capital Sarajevo, when the accident occurred. The cause has not yet been determined, and EUFOR and the Italian Ministry of Defence are conducting a comprehensive investigation, with further information to be released once verification is complete.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed condolences to the victims and their families. EUFOR took over the mission in Bosnia-Herzegovina from NATO in 2004 and comprises 1,000 to 1,500 personnel operating under a United Nations Security Council mandate to maintain security and oversee implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement.
