California-based Joby Aviation announced on September 18, 2026, that a modified Cessna 208B Caravan aircraft fitted with its autonomous flight technology completed a 3,199-mile transcontinental journey across the United States. Known as the J208, the turboprop aircraft traveled from California to North Carolina without a single control input from its onboard safety pilot, demonstrating fully autonomous navigation across multiple stages of flight.
The cross-country demonstration commenced on September 8, 2026, in Concord, California. Throughout the multi-stop journey, the autonomous system handled its own taxiing, takeoffs, and landings. The eastbound routing included operational stops in Phoenix, Fort Worth, Texas, and Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, preceding an autonomous landing at Dare County Regional Airport (MEO) in North Carolina. Following its arrival on the East Coast, the aircraft also conducted an autonomous low pass near the Wright brothers' First Flight Monument in Kitty Hawk.
Operational oversight during the flight was provided by a remote pilot who acted as the pilot in command. From ground monitoring stations located as far as 2,300 miles away, personnel managed flight-plan updates and conducted air traffic control communications via the aircraft's onboard radios. Although a safety pilot remained inside the cockpit throughout the mission to take control if necessary, Joby confirmed that no manual control interventions were required.
The autonomous technology relies on capabilities acquired when Joby purchased the autonomous flight division of developer Xwing in June 2024. Prior to the coast-to-coast tour, the system had logged more than 400 flights and 800 automated flight hours across controlled and uncontrolled airspace. Joby plans to leverage this automation technology to enhance future capabilities for its electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) air taxi, which is currently designed to carry one pilot and four passengers.
