The Italian Ministry of Defence reported that an Italian Army CH-47 Chinook assigned to the EUFOR Althea mission crashed near Brčko, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on 29 October 2026, killing four personnel and injuring eleven others.

The four fatalities comprised two Italian Army aviation crew members and two members of the Italian Red Cross Military Volunteer Corps; the eleven injured are receiving treatment with none in life‑threatening condition, and an Italian medical team has been dispatched.

EUFOR confirmed the helicopter went down during routine training in the Gorice area of the Brčko District, about 180 kilometres from Sarajevo, with no civilian casualties or property damage.

The cause remains undetermined; both the Italian Ministry of Defence and EUFOR have launched separate investigations, and Italy’s ambassador to Bosnia said the accident appeared to have occurred during take‑off.

The aircraft departed Viterbo on 28 October, stopped at Pratica di Mare Air Base, then continued to Bosnia. The Italian Army ordered 16 ICH‑47F Chinooks in 2009, with the first two delivered to the 1st Army Aviation Regiment ‘Antares’ in Viterbo in 2014.
