Sydney Airport (SYD) announced it has begun rolling out a fleet of 50 electric buses to replace its diesel-powered vehicles, marking a step toward its target of reaching net zero for Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030.
The new fleet, supplied by Australian electric vehicle manufacturer Bus & Coach International (BCI), will progressively replace diesel-powered buses used to transport passengers and staff across the airport’s landside and airside operations.
The fleet comprises 25 dual-control airfield apron buses and 25 "Citirider" electric shuttle buses. Each bus will be powered by 100% renewable energy through Sydney Airport’s existing power purchase agreement, directly reducing the airport’s Scope 1 emissions from ground operations.
Digital information displays will also be introduced onboard and at bus stops, giving passengers live estimates of travel time and wait times.
