Taiwan's Air Force has received its first batch of two MQ-9B unmanned aerial vehicles purchased from the United States. Following assembly and preliminary testing conducted jointly by technical staff from manufacturer General Atomics and the military, the aircraft successfully completed their first test flight at Hualien Air Base on the morning of September 14, 2026. Official sources indicated that the deployment aims to leverage the drone's long endurance and all-weather surveillance capabilities to enhance domain awareness around the Taiwan Strait.
The procurement project is backed by a budget allocation of NT$21.7 billion spanning from 2022 through 2029. Under the agreement, Taiwan is acquiring four MQ-9B drones manufactured by General Atomics, along with associated equipment including ground control stations. The deliveries are structured in two separate tranches of two aircraft each, scheduled for delivery in 2026 and 2027. The first two aircraft formally underwent delivery acceptance procedures in the United States on March 17, US West Coast time.
In defense budget documentation, the Air Force emphasized that establishing a high-altitude unmanned aerial system with persistent day-and-night surveillance capabilities is critical for monitoring regional military movements. The system features real-time data link capabilities to transmit intelligence imagery immediately for tactical analysis. Additionally, the platform's high operational ceiling and long loiter time provide support for defensive operations while reinforcing strategic deterrence.
Defense analyst Su Tzu-yun of the Institute for National Defense and Security Research noted that the MQ-9B's primary role for Taiwan focuses on battlefield intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) rather than offensive strike missions. During routine readiness periods, the system offers continuous monitoring against grey-zone maritime operations, effectively bridging gaps in maritime domain awareness.
