Netherlands Signs Intent to Procure Saab GlobalEye Early Warning Aircraft

Swedish defense and aerospace manufacturer Saab announced on September 10, 2026, that the Netherlands has signed a Letter of Intent to purchase its GlobalEye Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) aircraft. The announcement marks the latest step in the Netherlands' plan to establish a sovereign early warning capability for its air force, utilizing the GlobalEye system based on the Bombardier Global business jet platform.

Under the current arrangement, the Netherlands plans to acquire a single sovereign aircraft dedicated to its own air force. According to the Swedish government, delivery of the Dutch aircraft is targeted for 2031. Additionally, beginning in 2028, Dutch crews will have the opportunity to train on GlobalEye aircraft within the Swedish Air Force to prepare for future operational deployment.

Micael Johansson, President and CEO of Saab, welcomed the notification of intent, stating that the aircraft will enhance the situational awareness and early warning capabilities of Dutch forces across multiple domains. However, Saab clarified that the parties have not yet signed a final contract, and the manufacturer has not yet received an official order from the Netherlands.

Currently, the Netherlands lacks a sovereign airborne early warning capability and relies on NATO's shared fleet of aging E-3 Sentry radar aircraft. In July 2026, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte announced that 11 European NATO allies, including the Netherlands, will jointly procure up to ten GlobalEye aircraft to replace the alliance's E-3 Sentries. The new Letter of Intent represents an additional procurement effort focused on a sovereign Dutch aircraft.

The demand for airborne early warning replacement has grown as existing regional fleets face aging infrastructure and operational limitations. While Boeing's E-7 Wedgetail serves in other international forces, European nations have increasingly examined European-built solutions such as the Saab GlobalEye to fulfill future defense requirements and maintain long-term surveillance capabilities.
