Amazon Air maintains a global air freight network encompassing more than 100 aircraft, but the logistics service does not operate cargo flights directly as a certified air carrier. According to company disclosures regarding its air freight network, Amazon provides services by contracting with specialized partner cargo carriers. These external airlines supply the required pilots, routine aircraft maintenance, and regulatory certifications necessary to conduct everyday operations. Partner carriers currently fly more than 250 daily flights across the Amazon Air network between sorting hubs and fulfilment centers.
Among the major operators in North America, Air Transport Services Group (ATSG) subsidiaries Air Transport International (ATI) and ABX Air maintain a substantial presence in the cargo network. According to ATSG's 2024 SEC filing, ATSG was leasing 30 Boeing 767 freighters to Amazon at the end of 2024 while simultaneously operating 21 Boeing 767 freighters provided directly by Amazon. Additionally, Minneapolis-based Sun Country Airlines has flown cargo flights for Amazon since 2020, operating 20 Amazon-owned freighters.
For high-capacity operations, Amazon announced an agreement in 2022 with Hawaiian Airlines to maintain and operate an initial fleet of 10 Airbus A330-300 converted freighters on Amazon's behalf. Overseas network operations rely on regional airline partners, with ASL Airlines Ireland operating freight flights in Europe and QuikJet Airlines flying dedicated cargo routes in India. Canadian carrier Cargojet has also been utilized by Amazon to operate Boeing 767 freighters.
Fleet data compiled by Cirium indicates that cargo carrier 21 Air operates eight aircraft for Amazon's network. An Amazon-branded cargo jet operated by 21 Air recently made headlines following a runway overrun incident at Miami International Airport on September 6. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is currently conducting an investigation into the occurrence, and official authorities have not yet determined or released any cause for the incident.
