American Airlines has announced a comprehensive cabin upgrade program for its narrowbody fleet, under which all new Airbus and Boeing aircraft delivered starting in 2028 will feature personal seatback entertainment screens, USB-C fast-charging ports, and Bluetooth audio connectivity. As part of this broader cabin strategy, the carrier plans to increase the proportion of premium seating across its narrowbody fleet from approximately 25% today to 40% in the coming years.
Regarding specific aircraft modifications, American Airlines is retrofitting its Airbus A319 (ICAO type code A319) and Airbus A320 (ICAO type code A320) fleets to add an additional row of First Class seating. Furthermore, upcoming deliveries of the carrier's Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft will be configured with 24 First Class seats, while its Airbus A321neo fleet will also be reconfigured to feature extra First Class options.
Beyond first class enhancements, the fleet upgrade plan includes expanding the number of Main Cabin Extra seats across the majority of American's narrowbody aircraft. This upgraded economy option offers passengers additional legroom, earlier boarding privileges, dedicated overhead bin space, and complimentary beverages. The airline will also perform interior cabin refurbishments across its narrowbody aircraft, incorporating redesigned seating, enhanced cabin lighting, and expanded storage space.
This strategic pivot marks a notable shift for the carrier, which approximately a decade ago removed seatback screens from its Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 aircraft as a cost-cutting measure designed to reduce overall aircraft weight and fuel expenses. At the time, passengers were expected to rely on personal electronic devices for inflight entertainment. However, driven by evolving passenger preferences and growing demand in the premium travel market, the airline is now reinstating seatback screens alongside enhanced cabin offerings across its narrowbody fleet.
