According to a report by Simple Flying, American Airlines recently operated a passenger flight utilizing sustainable fuel made from waste carbon dioxide (CO2). This flight represents a new development in the aviation industry's efforts to find alternative energy sources and reduce carbon emissions, even though the current economics of the fuel remain a significant challenge.
The operation marked the first delivery of electronic sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) to a commercial airport in the United States for use on a passenger flight. Although this type of fuel synthetic process recycles carbon dioxide, its extremely high production cost remains a barrier to widespread adoption.
