Australian low-cost carrier Jetstar Airways has announced that it will begin charging economy passengers for access to overhead locker space on all flights departing from February 2, 2027. According to the airline, the new policy is designed to streamline the boarding process and mitigate cabin baggage stress for both passengers and crew members.

Under the overhauled baggage policy, Jetstar is replacing its existing 7kg carry-on weight limit with a size-based framework. Every fare tier will continue to include one complimentary underseat personal item, such as a handbag, small backpack, or laptop bag, measuring up to 40 x 30 x 20 cm. Passengers wishing to bring a larger cabin bag on board to store in the overhead bins will be required to purchase the airline's new Priority Carry-on option.

The Priority Carry-on add-on permits passengers to store a cabin bag weighing up to 10kg with maximum dimensions of 56 x 36 x 23 cm in the overhead lockers. It also includes priority boarding privileges, allowing passengers to board earlier and secure bin space before general boarding commences. The optional service will be offered in limited quantities starting from A$25 one-way, with pricing varying according to the specific flight route. Jetstar Chief Executive Officer Stephanie Tully stated that carry-on weighing and locker space competition were major travel friction points, adding that the shift to a size-focused model aims to improve on-time departures while preserving low fares.

The airline confirmed that existing passengers who booked prior to the policy announcement for travel after February 2, 2027, will receive Priority Carry-on access at no additional charge. Checked baggage rules and allowances remain unchanged under the new policy. Jetstar represents the first airline in Australia and New Zealand to introduce explicit fees for overhead bin access, adopting an ancillary revenue strategy pioneered by European low-cost carriers including Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air.
