IATA, AFRAA and AASA urge African states to align API and PNR with global standards

The International Air Transport Association, the African Airlines Association and the Airlines Association of Southern Africa issued a joint statement on 30 July 2026 urging African governments to implement Advance Passenger Information (API) and Passenger Name Record (PNR) systems in line with ICAO standards and global best practices. The statement sets out four guiding principles — legality, proportionality, purpose, and consistency and accuracy — and stresses that API and PNR border‑security programmes must be funded by governments, not by charges on airlines or passengers.

WestJet Issues 72-Hour Lockout Notice Following CUPE Strike Threat

Canadian carrier WestJet issued a 72-hour lockout notice on July 30, 2026, in response to a 72-hour strike notice from the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 8125. If no collective agreement is reached, a work stoppage could occur as early as August 2, 2026, just after midnight. WestJet Group CEO Alexis von Hoensbroech noted that the lockout decision was not made lightly and that the airline remains committed to bargaining. Meanwhile, the union stated that the strike notice does not guarantee industrial action, though it claims flight attendants perform up to 35 hours of unpaid ground work monthly. WestJet is offering flexible ticket changes for travel through August 4.

Taiwan Detects 22 PRC Aircraft Near Island with 16 Crossing Strait Median Line
