On 6 September, Simple Flying reported that Boeing's 777X program, plagued by delays, must tear open and modify 30 completed jets before they can be delivered to airlines.

The programme previously secured FAA approval to begin certification flight testing under Type Inspection Authorization 4B, with first delivery targeted for 2027; Lufthansa has also said it will reject some early-production 777-9s and is negotiating modifications with Boeing.

Boeing engineers recently used a simple leaf blower to pinpoint the 2024 thrust-link issue, and the 777-9 test fleet has accumulated 4,800 flight hours as the programme moves toward certification.

The next-generation GE9X turbofan will be the exclusive powerplant for the 777X, making it the programme's sole engine source.
