The US State Department has approved a potential Foreign Military Sale to Qatar of up to four Boeing KC-46A Pegasus aerial refueling aircraft and associated equipment, valued at an estimated maximum of $4.5 billion. According to an official notification released on August 20, 2026, the proposed transaction aims to establish a dedicated aerial refueling capability for the Qatar Emiri Air Force.
Under the requested package, Qatar has sought to procure up to four KC-46A tankers and eight Pratt & Whitney PW4062 turbofan engines, comprising four installed engines and four spares. The package also encompasses ten AN/ALR-69A radar warning receivers, Guardian Laser Transmitter Assemblies for Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasure systems, missile-warning sensors, secure communications equipment, identification transponders, training equipment, spare parts, and logistical support.
The State Department noted that the $4.5 billion figure represents the upper estimate for the total package. Qatar has not signed a formal contract, and the final value could decrease depending on the specific hardware and services included in any prospective agreement. The proposed deal must undergo congressional review, and the initial notification does not guarantee that a purchase contract will be finalized or that all four aircraft will be acquired.
According to the State Department, the proposed sale aligns with US foreign policy and national security objectives by enhancing the security of a major non-NATO ally. Authorities stated that the KC-46A tankers will improve Qatar's ability to counter present and future threats through timely refueling of its fighter fleet without altering the basic military balance in the region. The principal contractors named for the potential program are Boeing, Pratt & Whitney, RTX, and Northrop Grumman.
