Incheon International Airport (ICN) in South Korea has installed a fence around check-in counter E in Terminal 1 to prevent passengers from jumping queues, following viral videos of crowd surges in July 2026. The protective barrier was implemented after videos showed travelers rushing toward departure counters, raising operational and safety concerns among airport management.
According to the Incheon International Airport Corporation, transparent panels of the new fence were equipped with safety stickers to increase visibility and prevent accidental collisions by passengers. In addition to the physical structure, airport authorities deployed extra security personnel to monitor the departure hall and introduced digital warning displays stating that check-in services could be denied if the safety of airport staff is threatened. Official sources reported that no further queue-jumping incidents have been observed since the implementation of these measures.
The interventions follow a July 2, 2026 incident where footage showed dozens of passengers heading toward check-in counters for a China-bound flight in Terminal 1. Bypassing designated zigzag lines created by retractable belt barriers, travelers pushed luggage carts around or underneath barriers to bypass waiting lines. South Korean media reported that at least five similar crowd surge events occurred between July 2 and July 10, resulting in minor injuries, including bruises and abrasions, to several airport employees who attempted to redirect crowd flow.
Airport officials attributed part of the overcrowding to recent aircraft upgauging on major routes between Incheon and China, where operators shifted from the Airbus A320 (ICAO type code A320) to the larger Airbus A350, adding approximately 100 seats per flight. The increased passenger capacity led to concentrated arrivals at check-in counters during specific departure windows. Incheon Airport handled 38.39 million international passengers in the first half of 2026, marking a 6.3% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.
