According to AeroTime, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) and Hyundai Rotem signed a memorandum of understanding on August 12, 2026, at KAI's headquarters in Sacheon, South Korea. The agreement covers the joint development and systems integration of long-range air-to-air missiles for the KF-21 Boramae fighter, alongside plans to explore package-type export models and joint marketing opportunities.

The domestic missile development effort is led by South Korea's Agency for Defense Development (ADD) and is scheduled to run from 2026 to 2033. The program aims to reduce the air force's reliance on imported beyond-visual-range missiles. Additionally, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration declared the KF-21 development program complete on July 29, 2026. KAI plans to deliver the first batch of 40 KF-21s to the Republic of Korea Air Force by 2028.
