Indian carrier IndiGo issued an official statement on August 3, 2026, welcoming Willie Walsh as its new chief executive officer. The announcement comes after the airline first revealed in March 2026 that Walsh would be joining the company. Commenting on his appointment, Walsh highlighted India's status as one of the world's fastest-growing aviation markets, stating that it presents immense opportunities for IndiGo. He added that the airline has established a remarkable legacy over the past two decades and noted that it is an exciting time to assume leadership.

Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo, expressed enthusiasm regarding Walsh's official arrival as CEO. Bhatia stated that as IndiGo enters its third decade and prepares for its next phase of growth, Walsh's extensive global experience in the aviation sector, combined with his operational and strategic expertise, will be instrumental in driving the airline's international expansion strategy.

According to IndiGo, Walsh will be responsible for overall management and strategic direction in his role as CEO. The company stated that his primary focus will encompass accelerating the airline's global growth trajectory, driving operational excellence, strengthening network and commercial strategies, and further enhancing the overall customer experience.

Walsh's background in aviation spans several decades, starting as a pilot at Aer Lingus before becoming CEO of the carrier in 2001. He subsequently served as CEO of British Airways from 2005 to 2011 and as CEO of International Airlines Group (IAG) between 2011 and 2020. For the past five years, he held the role of Director General at the International Air Transport Association (IATA). His appointment follows the departure of previous CEO Pieter Elbers in December 2025, after IndiGo experienced significant flight cancellations linked to new Flight Duty Time Limitation rules introduced by India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
