NATS outage: Over 1,300 flights cancelled Tuesday; airlines add extra services to clear backlog

The UK's air traffic control system has resumed operations after Tuesday's NATS failure, but disruption continues. According to FlightRadar data, over 1,300 flights were cancelled across the UK on Tuesday, with a further 177 cancellations recorded by Wednesday morning.

British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair, Jet2 and Wizz Air are among carriers working through the backlog, while international airlines including KLM, Lufthansa and SWISS are also affected. British Airways said it worked overnight to create a revised schedule and operate as many flights as possible, but had to cancel more than 190 flights from its original schedule.

There is no central network of rescue flights; airlines are reinstating cancelled services, adding ad hoc flights, changing aircraft rotations and rebooking passengers onto existing departures. Recovery operations are ongoing at airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, Manchester and Birmingham, while London City Airport says operations have returned to normal.
