German carrier Lufthansa operated its first passenger flight equipped with Starlink satellite Wi-Fi onboard on August 19, 2026, marking the official launch of its inflight connectivity upgrade program. The inaugural service was performed by an Airbus A320neo registered as D-AINM, operating flight LH234 from Frankfurt to Rome. The flight departed Frankfurt at 12:15 local time, and Lufthansa Chief Executive Officer Jens Ritter activated the system once the aircraft reached an altitude of approximately 10,000 metres.
The equipped Airbus A320neo will remain in regular scheduled service across Lufthansa's European flight network. This deployment represents the first phase of a broader initiative by Lufthansa Group, which aims to equip approximately 850 aircraft across its member airlines with Starlink high-speed internet by 2029. Before the end of 2026, the group expects to equip up to ten additional A320-family aircraft operated by Lufthansa and Lufthansa City Airlines.
Equipment installation is being conducted primarily at the Lufthansa Technik facility in Berlin, integrated with scheduled maintenance checks to minimize operational aircraft downtime. Under the new commercial offering, Starlink Wi-Fi is accessible free of charge to all passengers who sign in using a Lufthansa Group Travel ID or Miles & More membership. The free high-speed connectivity applies uniformly across all cabin classes, including Economy, Business, and First Class, departing from the carrier's legacy FlyNet pricing tier system.
Lufthansa stated that the increased bandwidth allows inflight connectivity to perform similarly to ground-based internet networks, enabling passengers to browse websites, stream videos, send messages, and access cloud-based work tools across multiple devices. However, based on passenger feedback, the airline maintains policy restrictions prohibiting voice and video calls as well as live streaming during flights to prevent cabin noise disturbance. The system provides gate-to-destination coverage throughout the entire flight duration.
