American Airlines is shaking up its senior leadership as CEO Robert Isom faces pressure to improve financial performance and close the gap with rivals Delta Air Lines and United Airlines.

The changes broaden oversight across commercial and operational teams, including the appointment of former Spirit Airlines Chief Operating Officer John Bendoraitis to lead technical operations.

Isom acknowledged a "meaningful gap" between current performance and company goals, describing the moves as part of a series to improve execution.

New responsibilities include Nat Pieper overseeing marketing and branding, Heather Garboden managing reservations and service recovery, and JC Gulbranson overseeing airports and planning.
