Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an has put forward a policy proposal to relocate Songshan Airport, and the issue continues to draw attention. A recent poll cited by CNA showed 41% did not support the plan, more than the 31% who supported it.
Kuomintang councillor Chin Hui-chu proposed initiating a local referendum, to be held alongside the 2028 presidential election.
Speaking to reporters on October 19, Chiang said he is willing to listen to opinions from all sides and to face difficulties together with the central government and overcome them one by one.
He also mentioned the completion of Taoyuan International Airport (TPE)'s Terminal 3 and third runway, saying the period between 2027 and 2033 could be used to actively take stock and put related supporting measures in place.
Executive Yuan Secretary-General Chang Tun-han said relocating Songshan Airport cannot be discussed by looking at a few PowerPoint slides. Chiang responded, "Of course not!"
Chiang said the city government had told the central government in a 2023 official document that it believes relocating Songshan Airport benefits Taipei's future development and is a shared expectation of residents, and hoped the Ministry of Transportation and Communications would include it in overall planning.
