A new expedition is heading to Nikumaroro in Kiribati to search for Amelia Earhart’s missing aircraft. Researchers are examining an unusual feature beneath a lagoon that may offer a clue to the disappearance. The expedition, supported by Purdue University and the Archaeological Legacy Institute, is investigating an underwater formation that appears to resemble part of an aircraft.
Researchers hope to determine whether the feature could be wreckage from Earhart’s Lockheed Electra. Its identity has not been confirmed; investigators still need to establish whether it is aircraft wreckage or a natural feature. Earhart disappeared in July 1937 while flying with navigator Fred Noonan.
