The International Air Transport Association (IATA) marked the 10th anniversary of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Assembly resolution establishing the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), calling on governments to strengthen the framework. Adopted at the 2016 ICAO Assembly, CORSIA established what IATA described as the first global market-based measure for an industrial sector.

IATA said more than 130 countries participate in CORSIA and estimated that the scheme would have mitigated about 200 million tonnes of CO2 by the end of the year. The European Union is considering proposals to extend its Emissions Trading System to destinations within 5,000 km, using Frankfurt as its geographic center. IATA said the review should reinforce CORSIA as the global framework for international aviation rather than encourage overlapping regional or bilateral systems.
