Egyptian carrier Air Cairo signed a firm order with Airbus for 15 A320neo narrowbody aircraft on September 8, 2026, at the El Alamein International Airshow 2026. The agreement marks the airline's first direct purchase order from Airbus, establishing direct aircraft ownership to complement its existing leased fleet.
The A320neo aircraft will be configured in Air Cairo's single-class passenger layout carrying up to 186 passengers. Equipped with new-generation engines, the type delivers at least a 20 percent reduction in fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions per seat compared with previous-generation aircraft. The new jets will support scheduled and leisure services connecting Egypt with destinations across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.
Hussein Sherif, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Air Cairo, stated that combining owned aircraft with the carrier's leased fleet offers enhanced operational flexibility and financial efficiency during expansion. Sherif noted that the A320neo will provide the needed capacity to serve growing travel demand to and from Egypt while supporting the nation's aviation and tourism sectors.
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus Executive Vice President of Sales for Commercial Aircraft, welcomed Air Cairo's first direct acquisition. He emphasized that the commitment highlights the airline's confidence in the A320neo to power its next growth phase while delivering the efficiency required to scale connectivity across regional and international networks.
Air Cairo has expanded rapidly from seven aircraft five years ago to a fleet of over 45 aircraft today, incorporating Airbus narrowbodies, ATR 72 turboprops, and Embraer E190 (ICAO type code E190) regional jets. The airline aims to scale its fleet to more than 130 aircraft by 2034, operating domestic and international routes from bases including Cairo, Hurghada, and Sharm El Sheikh.
