South African regional carrier Airlink has cancelled its planned formation flypast scheduled for 5 September 2026 over FNB Stadium in Johannesburg. The decision comes as the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) reviews flight data from the airline's controversial low-altitude flyover in Cape Town on 29 August.
The Cape Town event involved two Embraer E195 (ICAO type code E195) regional jets performing a formation flight over DHL Stadium. Flight-tracking data from Flightradar24 indicated the leading aircraft flew approximately 41 to 46 feet (12.5 to 14 meters) above the stadium's roof. On 2 September, SACAA confirmed it has initiated compliance checks and retrieved flight data recorder downloads from the aircraft. Airlink stated that the cancellation of the Johannesburg flyover was due to unfavorable weather forecasts rather than the regulatory investigation.
