Boeing released its 2026 Commercial Market Outlook for Africa in Nairobi, Kenya, forecasting that the continent's commercial air passenger traffic will grow by nearly 6 percent annually through 2045. Driven by a young and increasingly urban population, an expanding middle class, and ongoing infrastructure improvements, Africa's air travel expansion is projected to rank among the fastest global growth rates over the next two decades.
To meet this expanding travel demand, Boeing projects that Africa's commercial airplane fleet will more than double over the next 20 years, expanding from 755 aircraft to 1,625 by 2045. The continent will require nearly 1,200 new airplane deliveries to support this expansion, with single-aisle aircraft accounting for 870 units to serve growing domestic and regional flight networks across the region.
Demand for widebody airplanes is also expected to more than double over the forecast period to support long-haul network growth and ongoing fleet modernization. In addition, Boeing forecasts that Africa's dedicated freighter fleet will expand from 60 to 150 aircraft as logistics operations, e-commerce adoption, and high-value export markets continue to develop across the continent.
The expansion of the regional aviation sector is anticipated to drive substantial demand for commercial aviation services and skilled workforce. Boeing's Commercial Services Market Outlook projects a $140 billion market for maintenance, repair, overhaul, modifications, and digital solutions in Africa through 2045. Furthermore, the manufacturer estimates that regional airlines will need 75,000 new aviation professionals, including 22,000 pilots, 25,000 technicians, and 28,000 cabin crew members.
Shahab Matin, Boeing managing director of Commercial Marketing, noted that Africa's aviation market is entering a sustained growth phase supported by improving connectivity and expanding intraregional travel. Meeting this growing demand will require sustained commitments to fleet modernization, capacity expansion, digital infrastructure, and workforce development across the continent.
