Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA) has signed an order for a single Airbus H160 helicopter, marking its first acquisition of the next-generation aircraft. Airbus confirmed the agreement on September 3, 2026, stating that the new helicopter will join the agency's fleet to boost emergency response speed and nationwide coverage.
The H160 will be stationed in Kumamoto Prefecture in the Kyushu region. Its primary role will involve rapid aerial reconnaissance and real-time visual intelligence gathering during major natural disasters. To maintain communications during crises, the aircraft will feature Helisat satellite technology, while Airbus is also developing specialized snow landing gear for winter conditions.
Currently, four Airbus H160 helicopters are actively operating in Japan for law enforcement, news gathering, and municipal firefighting operations.
