On September 3, 2026, Japan's Fire and Disaster Management Agency (FDMA) signed an order for its first Airbus H160 helicopter. Stationed in Kumamoto prefecture within the Kyushu region, the helicopter will join the FDMA's existing fleet to enhance nationwide emergency response capabilities and coverage.
The H160 will be utilized for rapid aerial reconnaissance and real-time visual intelligence gathering during major natural disasters. It will feature Helisat satellite technology to stream high-definition data directly to satellites, bypassing damaged ground infrastructure. Airbus is also developing custom snow landing gear for deep-snow operations.
