The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that developer Elroy Air and the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development conducted a hybrid-electric demonstration flight at Houma-Terrebonne Airport (HUM) in Louisiana, United States, to evaluate cargo delivery capabilities using a remotely piloted aircraft.

According to official statements from the agency, this test flight marks the first remotely piloted aircraft flight conducted under the FAA's eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). The eIPP initiative was established as part of President Trump's Unleashing Drone Dominance Executive Order to create large-scale testing environments for next-generation aircraft. In March 2026, the U.S. Department of Transportation selected eight participating projects across 26 states, with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development designated as one of the state-level program participants.

The flight test was conducted using Elroy Air's Chaparral aircraft, which is configured as a highly automated hybrid-electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) system designed to move heavy air cargo between non-traditional landing sites. Elroy Air Chief Executive Officer Andrew Clare stated that the Chaparral was designed to transport heavy payloads autonomously for applications including offshore energy platforms, industrial supply chain logistics, disaster response efforts, and communities that lie beyond traditional transport infrastructure.

FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford emphasized that the demonstration provides critical data to support transitioning Advanced Air Mobility concepts from experimental trials to operational deployment. Bedford noted that such test flights demonstrate how new aircraft types can expand cargo transport options across the nation and improve general logistics infrastructure. The FAA indicated it will analyze operational findings from these eIPP flights to identify regulatory and procedural gaps, helping ensure the safe integration of autonomous cargo aircraft into the National Airspace System as additional test flights proceed through the rest of the year.
