A Royal Air Force Airbus A400M Atlas transport aircraft landed on the remote Norwegian Arctic island of Jan Mayen on August 29, 2026. The aircraft delivered US Marines, UK Royal Marines, and two Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTVs) to the island, which is located north of the Greenland-Iceland-UK (GIUK) gap. The deployment was conducted by LXX Squadron from RAF Brize Norton (RAF) as part of Operation Atlantic City 26.
Operating from August 26 to September 4, 2026, the operation is a Norwegian-led trilateral activity with the United Kingdom and the United States under NATO's enhanced vigilance activity, Arctic Sentry. Because Jan Mayen has no port and only offshore anchorages, the single unpaved gravel runway at Jan Mayensfield (ENJA) serves as the only practical route for delivering heavy vehicles and equipment directly to the island.
