Japan has officially unveiled the Kawasaki EC-2 standoff jammer electronic warfare aircraft in 2026. The new aircraft represents the latest specialized variant of the Kawasaki C-2 military airlifter produced by Japan's Kawasaki Aerospace Company. Development work on the standoff electronic warfare conversion program initially began in 2021, with the modified airframe first appearing publicly in March 2026.

The EC-2 platform is converted from a standard C-2 airframe registered as 68-1203, which was originally produced in 2016 as the third aircraft off the C-2 assembly line. The modified airframe features distinct exterior additions, including a prominent bulged nose cone, two large dorsal flarings with one positioned over the wingbox, and two additional flarings on the sides of the aft fuselage to accommodate electronic warfare equipment such as the J/ALQ-5 system.

In operational deployment, the primary mission of the EC-2 is to disrupt adversary operations across the electromagnetic spectrum while operating from standoff ranges outside the reach of enemy air defense systems. Utilizing a cargo aircraft platform provides significant operational advantages over fighter jets, particularly regarding electrical power generation capacity and thermal management requirements necessary for high-powered electronic jamming systems. The aircraft possesses a payload capacity of 82,900 pounds, compared to 26,200 pounds on the older Kawasaki C-1.

The baseline Kawasaki C-2 is a mid-sized, twin-engine transport aircraft powered by General Electric CF6 turbofans, designed to replace Japan's aging fleet of Kawasaki C-1 airlifters. As of 2026, a total of 21 C-2 family airframes have been delivered to service. This fleet consists of 17 standard C-2 transport aircraft, 3 RC-2 electronic intelligence and signals intelligence (ELINT/SIGINT) variants, and the single newly converted EC-2 standoff jammer aircraft.
