Vice President Bi-khim Hsiao said in an interview with Central News Agency that Taiwan's drone development faces not only technical challenges but also restrictions on testing airspace and regulations. The Executive Yuan has identified 18 drone testing zones and is working to shorten application procedures.
The vice president said new models and communication technologies require approval from the National Communications Commission (NCC), adding that 'the NCC's paralysis is also causing a certain degree of pressure on the industry.' The NCC is responsible for radio frequency and spectrum matters.
Hsiao expressed hope that both political camps will recognize the actual needs in military security and industrial development, and enable related plans to come through soon. For long-range drones lacking sufficient airspace, she noted they can 'only fly around in circles' to test endurance and distance, and international cooperation could allow tests in larger airspace in friendly countries.
