According to an investigation published by The New York Times on August 24, 2026, a Russian Molniya fixed-wing attack drone operating with onboard artificial intelligence killed three civilians in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine, on July 6, 2026. The victims of the strike at a gas station were identified as Tetiana Bubynets, a 19-year-old accounting student at Zaporizhzhia National University, Oleksiy Svirin, 41, and Roman Karpiy, 48. Bubynets was pronounced dead at a hospital, while Svirin and Karpiy later succumbed to their injuries.
Ukrainian air-defense commanders, drone specialists, and forensic investigators who examined the wreckage concluded that the aircraft flew without active radio control. The drone was one of approximately six aircraft involved in the attack, and the formation emitted no detectable radio-control signals. This lack of active RF links limited the effectiveness of Ukrainian electronic-warfare systems, which typically disrupt communications between remote pilots and attack drones.
Investigators found no radio-control antenna on the recovered airframe. Further examination of the drone's unencrypted Nvidia Jetson Orin minicomputer provided evidence of autonomous operation. Ukrainian specialists analyzed stored terrain imagery used by the system to navigate by comparing visual landmarks against a preprogrammed flight route. Additionally, the target-recognition software had been specifically trained to recognize categories of objects, likely targeting propane tanks stored at the gas station.
The system represents an advancement beyond "last-mile" autonomy, in which a human operator selects a target before onboard software takes over the final moments of flight. In the July 6 strike, the Molniya drone navigated to the target area and searched for matching visual profiles without real-time human intervention or final human designation. However, the aircraft failed to clear an apartment building adjacent to the gas station, struck a wall, and exploded close to people sheltering nearby.
Nvidia confirmed that photos of the recovered unit showed a Jetson Orin module. The company noted that the component is a commercial product intended for software developers, students, and startups, rather than purpose-built military hardware. Markings on the recovered module indicated that it was manufactured in China. Experts noted that this incident likely represents the first documented case of an AI-guided Russian drone causing civilian deaths.
