According to a report published by Simple Flying in August 2026, the US Army is currently working to upgrade its fleet of Chinook helicopters under a $472 million contract. The modernization effort seeks to extend the operational capability of the aircraft model, which originally dates back to the 1960s.

With no immediate replacement coming any time soon for the platform, the US Army is proceeding with the fleet upgrade program. This initiative is designed to extend the service life of the Chinook fleet, allowing the helicopters to continue flying into the 2040s.
