The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating an incident involving two American Airlines flights operating with the identical air traffic control call sign over Phoenix airspace. According to reporting, the event occurred shortly after midnight on August 14, 2026, when two Boeing 737-800 aircraft were simultaneously operating as American Airlines Flight 2482 near Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX).

The call sign duplication resulted from schedule disruption caused by weather delays on an inbound flight from Chicago O'Hare (ORD) to Phoenix. Rather than waiting for the delayed inbound aircraft to land before operating the return sector, American Airlines dispatched a replacement Boeing 737-800 that was already at Phoenix to operate the outbound service to Chicago. Consequently, both the delayed arriving flight and the replacement departing flight were airborne at the same time using the same flight identification.

Flight-tracking data indicated that at the time the duplication was identified, the arriving aircraft was descending through approximately 11,000 feet, while the departing aircraft was climbing towards 9,000 feet. Upon recognizing the potential conflict on the frequency, the air traffic controller distinguished between the two aircraft by referring to them as "American 2482 on the arrival" and "American 2482 on the departure," successfully maintaining altitude separation throughout the convergence.

The FAA confirmed that required separation between the two aircraft was maintained at all times during the event and noted that an official investigation is underway. American Airlines stated that it is also reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident. Aviation experts note that maintaining unique flight identifications for air traffic control is essential for automation systems to correctly track aircraft and manage separation in active airspace.
