Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr confirmed during the airline's second-quarter earnings call that discussions are currently underway with Boeing regarding early-production 777-9 aircraft. The discussions cover which early-production airframes Lufthansa will outright reject and which airframes could be accepted after being updated to the latest standards, with Boeing contributing financially toward the required modification work.

Lufthansa has become the second major Boeing 777X customer to announce that it will not accept some of the earliest 777-9 airframes built. Separately, Boeing previously reported in July 2026 that its 777X program received Federal Aviation Administration approval to begin certification flight testing under Type Inspection Authorization 4B, with first delivery remaining anticipated in 2027.
