Catania Fontanarossa Airport operator SAC announced that flight operations will remain suspended until 2 am on August 15 due to ongoing eruptions from Mount Etna affecting airspace sectors C1 and B3. Passengers have been advised to verify their flight status with airlines before travelling to the airport.
The disruption began on August 7 when volcanic activity and wind conditions forced the airport to suspend arriving flights while departures continued normally. Accumulated volcanic ash subsequently led to repeated airspace closures and the complete suspension of all flight operations.
Between August 6 and August 12, more than 600 flights scheduled for Catania were diverted to alternative airports, and nearly 2,000 scheduled flights were cancelled.
