Jetstar announced that from 2 February 2027 its cheapest fares will include only a small under‑seat bag; passengers who want to place a larger bag in the overhead locker must purchase Priority Carry‑on.

At the same time the carrier raises the carry‑on weight limit from 7 kg to 10 kg and adopts the model used by Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air in Europe, treating overhead bin space as sellable inventory.

IdeaWorksCompany estimates top airlines can earn about US$20 per passenger from overhead‑bin fees; European low‑cost carriers collected roughly US$16 billion in baggage fees in 2025, accounting for nearly one‑fifth of revenue. Transavia introduced a similar charge in April 2024 and disclosed more than €20 million in Q4 revenue, averaging about €4 per passenger with a €30 fee and an estimated 13 % uptake.
