U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy has unveiled new Surface Movement Radar (SMR) installations at Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).
The new SMR-4 technology enables air traffic controllers to track aircraft and vehicles on runways and taxiways under all weather and visibility conditions.
The installation at EWR marks the fifth SMR-4 unit deployed nationwide, while the DCA installation is part of broader efforts to modernize the U.S. air traffic control system.
Newark is scheduled to receive $30 million for upgrades over the next three years, while Reagan National will receive $30.5 million for critical safety and modernization projects.
