Flight-tracking platform FlightAware has filed a lawsuit against prediction-market operator Kalshi in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York, accusing the company of using its tracking data and trademark without permission to settle bets on US flight cancellations.
The lawsuit seeks a temporary restraining order and permanent injunction to stop Kalshi from utilizing FlightAware data and branding. FlightAware stated it issued multiple cease-and-desist demands, but Kalshi continued offering cancellation markets. Parent company RTX noted FlightAware is not affiliated with prediction markets and has not authorized any third party to use its network data for wagering.
FlightAware also raised operational concerns, arguing that prediction markets tied to flight cancellations could create incentives for individuals to deliberately interfere with airline or airport operations to influence contract outcomes.
