According to Aerospace Global News dated August 6, 2026, Northrop Grumman and Boeing have completed what they describe as the first automated manned-unmanned teaming demonstration between an MQ-4C Triton maritime surveillance drone and a P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft.
The demonstration took place in a laboratory setting, employing artificial intelligence and open-system interfaces to enable the two aircraft systems to share intelligence, plan missions, and coordinate maritime surveillance and anti-surface warfare tasks.
A P-8A operator instructed a simulated Triton to fly to a designated area; the Triton then autonomously planned its transit, activated its sensors, processed the gathered information onboard, and transmitted the findings back to the Poseidon.
Data exchange was partially routed through a satellite relay to simulate realistic operational communications, with the mission-management systems communicating via Open Mission Systems and the Universal Command and Control Interface rather than relying on a bespoke point-to-point link.
Northrop Grumman and Boeing characterized the effort as a jointly funded technology demonstration intended to show the "ability for the two systems to collaborate and automate mission control over open systems architecture," noting that such interoperability could reduce operator workload, speed decision-making, and simplify future platform integration.
The companies added that the standardized interface used enables machine-to-machine mission planning and execution across platforms, a capability they hope will allow U.S. and allied forces to connect various aircraft without needing new point-to-point integrations for each combination.
The report also notes that the U.S. Navy plans to acquire 68 MQ-4C Tritons, with around 43 delivered by mid‑2026, while the Royal Australian Air Force operates both the Triton and the P‑8A Poseidon, having received its final P‑8A in May 2026.
